A routine exercise devolves into a desperate emergency.
As the first signs of catastrophe engulf Hadley’s Hope, a routine
Colonial Marines logistics exercise devolves into an urgent rescue
operation. When the crew of a damaged dropship fails to reach the
colony, the personnel assigned to bring them home find themselves
navigating a rapidly deteriorating situation—one shaped by
incomplete information, rigid procedure, failing infrastructure,
and the dangerous assumption that there is still time to restore
control.
Visually, the film draws from the tactile, industrial world of Aliens:
weathered colony corridors, utilitarian machinery, hard-wearing
military equipment, and the blue-gray, low-key atmosphere of a
working installation under strain. This familiar visual language
is extended through an original production-design approach
informed by the function-first character of Soviet industrial
engineering. The goal is to make previously unseen areas of
Hadley’s Hope feel plausible within the larger world while giving
Colonial Maneuvers a distinct visual identity of its own.
Colonial Maneuvers is an independently produced,
unofficial, non-commercial fan short with a planned runtime of
five to nine minutes. Its self-contained format and
original-character approach are loosely inspired by the compact,
character-led storytelling encouraged by the official Alien 40th Anniversary Shorts Project,
though this production is unaffiliated with and unconnected to
that initiative.
The film is not a remake, continuation, or replacement for any
existing Alien film, and it features an original cast of
characters rather than canon-familiar leads.
02 / Development method
Built on an open & hybrid, indie-friendly workflow.
Colonial Maneuvers is an unofficial,
noncommercial fan project and educational production experiment
exploring accessible, unconventional approaches to low-budget
filmmaking. Its hybrid workflow combines local, open-weight
AI-assisted tools with green-screen performance capture, rear
projection and projection mapping for in-camera atmospherics,
Blender-based CG and compositing, and conventional editorial, color,
and sound finishing.
Local AI workflows, including ComfyUI, allow the all-volunteer team
to develop and iterate on ambitious science-fiction imagery that
would otherwise be difficult to realize on an independent budget.
Live-action plates, CG renders, practical projection elements, and
AI-assisted passes are assembled through a conventional
post-production process into a cohesive short film for online
release.
Alongside the completed film, the project will document lessons
learned across the production process: green-screen setup,
projection experiments, Blender scene construction, compositing,
AI-assisted image and video generation, and editorial finishing. The
aim is to share both the creative potential and practical
limitations of these tools, treating them as components of a broader
filmmaking workflow rather than as a substitute for it.
